Abstract

Costa Rican Social Security System is internationally considered one of the most successful and efficient systems in Latin America. First it started covering the Public Sector worker, and it has been straighten to become one of the most widely comprehensive in its approach, and one with the highest population and financial coverage. However, social security is facing a challenge, the sustainability of system and coverage; the route-map consists of renewing and straightening the fundamental principles of equity, solidarity and universality, besides, to complement them with new principles of transparency, sustainability and participation added to efforts for building an historic dream and reach the universal coverage.
