Abstract

The article argues thesocial construction ofgender in sexual division of work, andhow this divisionassignsdifferentvalues todifferent jobs. This debatehas transcendedCosta Ricaninstitutionsthroughco-responsibility for care workfrom two unresolved phenomena:the change in household composition and the entry of women into the labour market, situations that have created newconditions for women. Furthermore, the article addresses advances in legal and public policy matters, the role played by the feminist movement in the aim of extend the social co-responsibility for care work by all sectors of Costa Rican society and for the well-beingof people.
