Abstract

This presentation by María Laura Stephen Chaves addresses anti-racist intercultural pedagogy and the decolonization of knowledge in education. Drawing on the philosophical contributions of Raúl Fornet-Betancourt and Catherine Walsh, the author distinguishes critical interculturality from multiculturalism and transculturalism. She critiques multiculturalism for often being limited to tolerance, folklorization, and the maintenance of the eurocentric order under global capitalism. In contrast, she proposes critical interculturality as an ethical, political, and epistemic project focused on dismantling structural inequality and the monoculture of knowledge. Finally, she invites the transformation of the educational curriculum and pedagogical practices to legitimize the plurality of rationalities and knowledges denied by the colonial matrix.
